Street lighting in Lewes has evolved over 200 years with improvements in technology. Beginning with candles in lamps lit in the evenings by a lamp lighter, gas lighting came to Lewes in 1822. By the end of the 19th century electric street lights using incandescent light bulbs were available. Today LED lights and part night lighting schemes are used to save money and reduce carbon emissions.
