Prior to the 1974 Health and Safety At Work Act few industries were covered by any robust form of health and safety legislation. The absence here of any form of safety equipment: hard-hat, harness, secure scaffolding, would horrify present day building inspectors!

THE FACE OF THE HIGH STREET

How long have you been in business here and why Lewes?
39 years man and boy. I was unemployable.

Have you found that there's anything that people have asked for more now after lockdown has been lifted?
Pendants (they look great on zoom meetings).

What's been your favourite single moment/interaction while trading during lockdown or after having re-opened?
A transaction through the front window, passed through the letter box. Hilarious – surreal.

If you had the chance, which past Lewes High Street shop would you most like to re-introduce and why?
Porky priors, they were cheerfully obscene. And Mears Greengrocers. Made you think that Lewes had real people that needed common things.

Of all the events and meetings that happen on the High Street which are you most looking forward to experiencing again when social restrictions are eased?
Patina.
