This was the second disastrous High Street fire in 3 years. There was no hope of saving Smith’s, so the newly re-equipped fire service concentrated their efforts on saving the adjoining premises. The fire service was called at 2:45am on 19 October and dismissed at 8:30am, so the spectators are there quite early, maybe on their way to school or work.

THE FACE OF THE HIGH STREET

How long have you been in business here and why Lewes?
Rowland Gorringe has been open since 1926

Have you found that there's anything that people have asked for more now after lockdown has been lifted?
People have really been looking for more space and a bit of land over the past couple of months.

What's been your favourite single moment/interaction while trading during lockdown or after having re-opened?
I suppose for me its been that we are all in it together and that the good will of everybody is really keeping people uplifted!

Of all the events and meetings that happen on the High Street which are you most looking forward to experiencing again when social restrictions are eased?
Bonfire.
