Motorcycling was a hobby for the rich. The photo shows an expensive range of motorcycles: two Triumphs, a Chater Lea and an Indian, the latter a very rare American import. Details include the spare leather drive belt, the acetylene gas generators for the lighting and the racing armbands.

The White Hart Hotel

THE FACE OF THE HIGH STREET

How long have you been in business here and why Lewes?
Just the 31 years ago, when I bought the Hotel as a young man. Having recently examined the archives I found out that we are now the longest standing owner in the entire history of the Hotel. Lewes is the one place I am sure that could keep me excited about the evolution of my business even to this day. Sally and I are still discovering things about Lewes even after all these years.

Have you found that there's anything that people have asked for more now after lockdown has been lifted?
Many more people have asked to use our Roof Terrace since lockdown so they can enjoy the views of Lewes while at leisure but in the fresh air.

What's been your favourite single moment/interaction while trading during lockdown or after having re-opened?
We had a group of resident guests who locked down at the Hotel and they became like a family.

If you had the chance, which past Lewes High Street shop would you most like to re-introduce and why?
Santander.

Of all the events and meetings that happen on the High Street which are you most looking forward to experiencing again when social restrictions are eased?
Bonfire Night… the most extravagant bonfire festival in the world.
