Birkbeck Newsagents was established in 1952, selling newspapers through the kiosk outside the station as well as the shop area inside the booking hall. Until the 1980s newspapers came in by train overnight from London and were brought up by station porters. Birkbecks staff were allowed to use the space in the booking hall to sort the papers out for delivery to customers.

Self Storage Space

How long have you been in business here and why Lewes?
Self Storage Space is a small family run business… being locals they understood that… a local self-storage facility in the heart of town could help provide an essential service to the local community

Have you found that there's anything that people have asked for more now after lockdown has been lifted?
We remained open throughout lockdown… We were delighted to be able to offer customers’ access to their Goods… Since lockdown lifted, we have received enquiries from customers who need to free up space in their homes; to accommodate family members returning or to organise an office space at home... What is most apparent is that everyone is delighted to have a local supplier of cardboard boxes and other packing materials!

What's been your favourite single moment/interaction while trading during lockdown or after having re-opened?
… We have found people incredibly supportive of their local, small businesses. The lifting of lockdown did bring people to the area and day trippers were especially grateful for the Left Luggage service.

If you had the chance, which past Lewes High Street shop would you most like to re-introduce and why?
… The closure of Viva Lewes was an exceptionally sad moment. The magazine had brought so much to the local community and each month managed to highlight all the exceptional talent here in Lewes.

Of all the events and meetings that happen on the High Street which are you most looking forward to experiencing again when social restrictions are eased?
… Patina, where everyone is united in celebrating that sense of just belonging and supporting the local community. The organisers this year went out of their way to try to re-imagine the Moving On parade… and did an excellent job…
