A contemporary advertisement by Rugg enthused “There is a wealth of glorious countryside around Lewes. View it cheaply, comfortably, conveniently by motorcycle.” Mr Rugg was one of the earliest Lewes motorcyclists and took out his original licence the day they were first issued. The image shows the reflection of Benjamin Reeves taking the photograph.
How long have you been in business here and why Lewes?
Just over 45 years – it’s a beautiful location and grew up here. Didn’t want to move anywhere else as I love the South Downs and town.
Have you found that there's anything that people have asked for more now after lockdown has been lifted?
Properties with gardens have been in large demand with many new tenants moving away from cities and flat living to Sussex.
What's been your favourite single moment/interaction while trading during lockdown or after having re-opened?
Assisting with a famous actor to move to a rural property.
If you had the chance, which past Lewes High Street shop would you most like to re-introduce and why?
Not a past shop as I aim to look forward to the future and towns change and move with the times so I wouldn’t go backwards... New local shops and businesses are vital to keep the town vibrant and would flourish…
Of all the events and meetings that happen on the High Street which are you most looking forward to experiencing again when social restrictions are eased?
November 5th has to be the top one.
