The Mayor declared that this was the “best Shopping Week they had ever had in Lewes … the whole thing had gone with a great swing [and] Sussex was the first County to have an Empire Shopping Week” (Sussex Express 15 May 1931)

THE FACE OF THE HIGH STREET

How long have you been in business here and why Lewes?
We have had the shop in Lewes for 26 years. We were looking for a place to open when we lived in Brighton and liked the feel of the town. Preferring a county town over the bustle of Brighton.

Have you found that there's anything that people have asked for more now after lockdown has been lifted?
After lockdown we were overwhelmed with the demand for slippers and Birkenstocks.

What's been your favourite single moment/interaction while trading during lockdown or after having re-opened?
The best moment was just to open the doors and welcome back customers and lovely to see how quickly a lot of our regulars came back to support us.

If you had the chance, which past Lewes High Street shop would you most like to re-introduce and why?
Even though it would be a problem for us as we are in their shop, I would love to have international stores back. It would be nice to have an independent food store at the top of town.

Of all the events and meetings that happen on the High Street which are you most looking forward to experiencing again when social restrictions are eased?
Has to be bonfire I will miss it hugely this year it is what makes Lewes special.
