B. Sanger and Son was one of at least nine newsagents in Lewes at that time. Next door in the greengrocers, ladies with baskets on their arms inspect a plentiful display of fruit. It was a household shopping experience very different from todays. In 1953 there were fifteen greengrocers listed in the local directory, now there are none.
How long have you been in business here and why Lewes?
SCDA shop has been in Lewes for almost three years .We came to Lewes to help promote the work our charity does in the Lewes area.
Have you found that there's anything that people have asked for more now after lockdown has been lifted?
Bicycles, supplied by our recycling your bicycles scheme have been in high demand since our re- opening.
What's been your favourite single moment/interaction while trading during lockdown or after having re-opened?
During lockdown, customers were leaving notes asking for items they could see in the shop to be reserved for them. To our amazement each person did come back and purchase these items, some months later and were really delighted with their purchases. Just goes to show …you can sell winter stock in summer!
Of all the events and meetings that happen on the High Street which are you most looking forward to experiencing again when social restrictions are eased?
November 5th celebrations.
