Empire Shopping Weeks ran between 1926–33. They were an initiative from the Empire Marketing Board in response to a Conservative Party manifesto in 1922 that claimed, “The markets we have lost in Europe can best be replaced by further development of trade with overseas countries and especially of trade within the British Empire”.
Pickled produce can be seen in the glass jars in the doorway.

THE FACE OF THE HIGH STREET

How long have you been in business here and why Lewes?
Crew Clothing Company has been in Lewes for over 10 years. We love the town, it’s a great match for our product.

What's been your favourite single moment/interaction while trading during lockdown or after having re-opened?
It’s been really good welcoming our regular customers back into the store and catching up.

Of all the events and meetings that happen on the High Street which are you most looking forward to experiencing again when social restrictions are eased?
We’re really looking forward to a busy Christmas!
