Traditionally two type cases holding the letters and symbols were needed for letterpress printing. These were positioned on an angled stand, the case containing the capital letters being higher and further away from the compositor, hence - capital letters are called "upper case" characters while the small letters are "lower case".

Freight HHG

THE FACE OF THE HIGH STREET

How long have you been in business here and why Lewes?
We established Freight in 2014 although I started my first shop in lewes in 1999 at Number 88 High Street. Lewes is home.

Have you found that there's anything that people have asked for more now after lockdown has been lifted?
I can't think of anything that people are wanting to buy more of post lock up. We sold a lot of food during the lock down period. Little treats that people were buying to send to their friends and families.

What's been your favourite single moment/interaction while trading during lockdown or after having re-opened?
During lock down we were still operating our online from the shop. The High Street was so deserted. Depleted of both people and cars. The quiet was bliss. Libby's coffee kept us going on Wednesdays and Saturdays and it was lovely to meet people in the queue and exchange 'lock up' gossip.
Since lock down we have opened a new shop and people have generally been very complementary and seemed pleased to see us open again!

If you had the chance, which past Lewes High Street shop would you most like to re-introduce and why?
We are both food people and would love to see the Gourmet on School Hill back. Christmas was bliss and Mr Bannerman always looked the part in his green apron.

Of all the events and meetings that happen on the High Street which are you most looking forward to experiencing again when social restrictions are eased?
Lewes seems to be a town of kissers. We're very 'kissy' people and it feels very odd to go so against one's natural instincts!

What's been your favourite single moment/interaction while trading during lockdown or after having re-opened?
Late night shopping is always fun and just gets better so the next one we are allowed to have will be the best ever.
