This girl grappling with a baby and an empty jug may have been on the way to a local pub. It was common practice for parents to send children out to buy beer from a pub’s "jug and bottle" bar. In 1901 legislation was passed restricting the amount of beer children could purchase to be consumed off the premises.
How long have you been in business here and why Lewes?
I have worked at what is now Luggage Etc. Lewes for 19 years and owned it for 6 years. I started working here straight out of school and loved it.
What's been your favourite single moment/interaction while trading during lockdown or after having re-opened?
Having a cuppa and face to face catch up with my colleagues (phone calls are not the same).
If you had the chance, which past Lewes High Street shop would you most like to re-introduce and why?
I miss Forfars, I have not found a Swiss bun or gingerbread man anywhere near as yummy but will keep looking just in case.
