With the increased use of plastic packaging in the 1950s, councils had to give greater consideration to their street litter bins. The Women’s Institute initiated the ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ campaign in 1955, and the Council of Industrial Design organised a competition to design inexpensive bins for public spaces, which were exhibited in 1960.
