William Beck was the landlord of the Fruiterers Arms at 1 Sun Street, where he and his family lived until he joined up. William came from a family of beerhouse keepers – he and four of his siblings followed their father into the licensing trade. William and his wife Edith, daughter of an estate gardener at Barcombe, had six children altogether. The sixth child was born in 1922.
