Royal Field Artillery on parade at the Phoenix Ironworks. In the First World War, horses were used to pull heavy guns, to transport weapons and supplies, to carry the wounded and dying to hospital and to mount cavalry charges. The death rate was extremely high due to exhaustion, shelling and front-line charges.
