H07562 — Every; Soldiers at Ironworks, 1915

Box 70

Royal Field Artillery horses stabled at the Phoenix Ironworks. In 1914 the British army possessed only 25,000 horses and the War Office was given the urgent task of sourcing 500,000 more.  In the first year of the war the country was thus stripped of working horses and riding ponies requisitioned from their owners and transported by sea to the front line.
