Mr John Every was a prominent local figure who owned the Phoenix Ironworks. He lived at the Croft, a large house close to St Anne’s Church.
In the Sussex Express of Friday 28th May 1915 it was announced:
‘COMING WEDDING – The marriage will take place very quietly next month of Miss Jessie Every, only daughter of Alderman J.H. and Mrs Every, The Croft, St. Anne’s and the Rev. F.W. Woods M.A., Chaplain on H.M.S. Hibernia’.
