The Young Men’s Christian Association was founded in London by George Williams in 1844 as a prayer and bible study group. During the First World War the YMCA supported the troops. The red poppy was introduced by an American YMCA worker and is now a worldwide symbol of remembrance for those lost in war. The current Lewes YMCA is situated in Westgate Street.
